ISO 14001 is Changing in 2026: Are You Ready for the Transition? Upcoming Changes and How to Prepare

March 17, 2026

The new edition of ISO 14001:2026 standard is expected to be released in 2026. This updated standard supports organizations of all types in the systematic management of their environmental responsibilities, while also contributing to long-term sustainability. The core structure and purpose of the standard remain unchanged, making the transition from ISO 14001:2015 straightforward and simply for organizations already certified.

What Is Changing

The new edition offers a clearer and more organized structure and is aligned with modern environmental requirements-such as addressing climate change and using natural resources efficiently. At the same time, it is easier to implement and can be more readily integrated with other ISO Management Systems, such as ISO 9001 or ISO 45001.

The updated standard is expected to focus on strengthening organizational reliability and environmental protection in several key ways:

  • It helps organizations more accurately assess how local environmental conditions (e.g., climate change impacts, biodiversity loss, water availability) affect their operations – and vice versa. It also emphasizes the interaction between achieving business objectives and protecting the environment, highlighting the importance of strategically integrating sustainability.
  • It provides organizations with opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce operational costs, and maintain compliance with relevant legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Through improved and more consistent terminology, organizations can better interpret the standard’s requirements and implement it more effectively.
