ISO 9001:2026 – New requirements, new opportunities.

September 28, 2026

The new revision of ISO 9001 strengthens the quality culture, risk management, sustainability, and effective change management, adapting the standard with modern business requirements and the challenges of an ever-changing business environment.

The new edition of the internationally quality management standard, ISO 9001:2026, has been officially published, marking the beginning of a new era for organizations implementing Quality Management Systems (QMS). While the revision does not introduce radical changes to the standard’s core philosophy, it brings significant improvements and clarifications that address contemporary business challenges, technological advancements, and the growing expectations of interested parties.

What is Changing in ISO 9001:2026?

The new edition maintains the standard’s fundamental structure and philosophy, while introducing new requirements and clarifications aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of Quality Management Systems (QMS). Key changes include:

1. Introduction of New Terms and Definitions

The standard is aligned with the new Harmonized Structure of ISO and the revised ISO 9000:2026, providing greater consistency and coherence across management systems.

2. Greater Emphasis on Quality Culture and Ethical Behavior

For the first time, particular emphasis is placed on developing a strong quality culture and promoting ethical behavior throughout the organization. Leadership is expected to take a more active role in fostering these values and raising employee awareness.

3. Integration of Climate Change and New Technologies

Requirements that were previously included in separate amendment documents (ISO Amendments) have now been incorporated directly into the main body of the standard, specifically within Clauses 4.1 and 4.2. Organizations are therefore required to consider environmental impacts and related risks when determining their organizational context. The identification of internal and external issues arising from new technologies is considered essential for understanding the organization’s context and operating environment.

4. Stronger Change Planning

ISO 9001:2026 strengthens the requirements relating to the planning and management of changes within the Quality Management System. Emphasis is placed on communication, monitoring, evaluation, and review of changes to ensure their effective implementation.

5.Separation of Risks and Opportunities

Clause 6.1 has been revised to provide greater clarity on how organizations identify, assess, and manage risks and opportunities. This new approach supports better decision-making and more effective management of business challenges.

6. Strengthening Organizational Knowledge

The new edition expands the concept of organizational knowledge by directly linking it to the achievement of intended Quality Management System outcomes. Organizations are expected to manage their knowledge, experience, and skills more effectively.

7. More Extensive Implementation Guidance

Annex A has been enriched with additional explanations and interpretations of the standard’s requirements, facilitating its proper implementation across different types of organizations. At the same time, Annex B has been removed from the standard.

What Do the Changes Mean for Businesses?

The changes introduced by ISO 9001:2026 aim to create more resilient, responsible, and adaptable organizations. The stronger focus on quality culture, greater emphasis on change management, and integration of issues such as climate change reflect current business and societal requirements.

Organizations already certified to ISO 9001:2015 should assess the new requirements and plan their transition in a timely manner to ensure continued compliance and improved performance.

Transition Period

Following the publication of the revised standard, a transition period of up to three years is expected to be provided for certified organizations to adapt to the new requirements. The final transition timeline and the relevant transition dates will be announced by the competent accreditation bodies and Global ACI.

In Summary

ISO 9001:2026 edition represents a targeted and meaningful enhancement of the world’s most widely adopted quality management standard. While preserving the standard’s fundamental philosophy, it introduces new elements that strengthen sustainability, transparency, leadership, and continuous improvement. Organizations that prepare early will be able to use the new requirements as an opportunity for further growth and enhance their competitiveness.
